Digital traces of tourism: who’s really in Italy? Big data tells us

A destination records 100,000 visitors in a month. That’s an excellent result. But is it enough to decide where to invest, how to manage a major event, or which areas to promote?

The numbers show the extent of tourism. To make a decision, we also need to understand how it moves.

In this speech, we present a National Tourism Observatory that combines the reliability of official statistics with the power of big data from the cellular network. The result is a new perspective on Italian tourism: who chooses a destination, how long they stay, how they explore the area, how many visitors experience it as a day trip, and how behaviors change throughout the year.

In addition, using a real-world example in collaboration with the University of Basilicata, we will demonstrate how this data is transformed into concrete, locally tailored decisions regarding tourism, events, destination promotion, and sustainability.

Less intuition, more evidence for those who must plan and manage tourism
